Who has Keratosis pilaris?

have you tried any of the treatments? if so do they work? I've had it and I just thought it was little reddish dots that would go way with a special treatment but I just found out that its actually Keratosis pilaris and that there's no cure but there are treatments. I want to know if they work.

Who has Keratosis pilaris?
I have it and i have seen it. I am a skin care specialist ( lucky me) so i have access to all the treatments and i have seen them work on other people. It take a little while for results to start showing but the trick to this is to keep it up. Add it to your routine like bathing or brushing your teeth. And dont stop if it goes away because it will come back if you dont continue treatment. Good luck :)
Reply:Keratosis pilaris is a disorder of keratinization in which horny plugs fill the openings of hair follicles.

Does acnitic keratosis always turn into squamous cell carcinoma or can it also turn into basal cell carcinoma?

Prior to 3 areas developing on my chin that will not go away, for several years I had an area on my chin that was wart-like, it was small and skin colored and from the research I have done it is called acnitic keratosis(pre-cancer). It would come and go. But now I have the sores on my chin that won't go away for 2 months now. I do have an appointment at the end of this month with the dermatologist and I am on the cancellation list. Unfortunately I am one that loves the sun, I just returned from an Island and prior to going I did use the tanning bed like I do every year. I also have a Hx of CA in my family , my mother had breast CA and alot of my aunts and uncles on my mothers side has had some type of CA. I know with my Hx of CA and sun exposure you are probably saying how stupid could you be?? You just never think it will happen to you until it does. Maybe I'm overdiagnosing but I have to wait a month to find out.

Does acnitic keratosis always turn into squamous cell carcinoma or can it also turn into basal cell carcinoma?
An actinic keratosis is sometimes a precurser to squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinomas are also caused by excess UVA damage but in a different type skin cell. The ratio of AKs that convert into SCC varies but is around 2-15%. My own estimate is about one in six if the AK is given enough time to keep growing. Here is a new article from PUBMED discussing this same question.

Eur J Dermatol. 2006 Sep;16(4):335-9. Links

Actinic keratosis: how to differentiate the good from the bad ones?Quaedvlieg PJ, Tirsi E, Thissen MR, Krekels GA.

Department of Dermatology, University Hospital Maastricht, P.Debyelaan 25, Postbox 5800 6202 AZ Maastricht, The Netherlands. pqua@home.nl

Our objective was to obtain practical clinical parameters to indicate those actinic keratoses (AK) that are at risk of becoming invasive. A systematic review of the literature, with focus on randomized trials, retrospective studies and reviews was undertaken. The main outcome measure was the rates and clinical features of AK that transformed into SCC. This study reviewed randomized and retrospective studies and reviews of AK and their risk of becoming SCC. We reviewed a total of 875 studies and identified 62 useful prospective, retrospective studies and reviews. Finally 15 studies covering percentage and/or clinical parameters of malignant transformation were found to be useful: a total of 9 reviews, 4 randomized controlled trials and 2 retrospective studies. Only 1 study (meta-analysis) examined the percentage of malignant transformation and found a rate between 0.025% and 20% per year/per lesion. Clinical parameters found were: induration (3 studies), bleeding (3 studies), enlargement in diameter (3 studies), erythema (2 studies) and ulceration (2 studies). Other minor clinical criteria were pain, palpability, hyperkeratoses, pruritic lesions and pigmentation. The amount of quality research on the most common premalignant lesion in humans is disappointing. The only longitudinal study looking at the incidence of malignant transformation of AK to SCC dates from 1988.Besides the known risk factors (skin type, photodamage, immunosuppression etc), based on this review we found clinical features that provide a practical guide to practitioners in the treatment of AK. Although not prospectively studied, clinical parameters indicating those AK with an increased risk of malignancy are IDRBEU. I (Induration /Inflammation), D (Diameter %26gt; 1 cm), R (Rapid Enlargement), B (Bleeding), E (Erythema) and U (Ulceration). In future prospective studies, these parameters should be included.

Your family history of breast cancer does not influence your own chances of developing skin cancer but your history of tanning and sun exposure certainly does. You can reverse the development of many AKs with the prescription medicine Solaraze (topical diclofenac) if you apply it twice daily for three months or so. AKs that do not respond to Solaraze either need cryosurgery (freezing) or surgical removal. Solaraze will not effectively treat a SCC so if the Dr suspects you have a SCC it is better to treat the suspected SCC first with biopsy and excision and then treat any remaining non threatening AKs with Solaraze. Solaraze will not help if you continue tanning or sun exposure.

If you do end up being diagnosed with SCC then you need to realize that your tanning and heavy sun exposure days are over because once you have one SCC of the skin the chances of you developing a second SCC are increased and will not decrease. Chances are about 40-70% that a person with one biopsy proven SCC will develop another one within five years.

There is some preliminary research that indicates drinking green tea daily might reduce a person's chances of developing skin cancers due to excess sun exposure and possibly help in the DNA repair of UVA damage of the skin. So far the research is not completely convincing but if you like drinking tea it certainly won't hurt any to add tea to your daily diet.

Skin cancer chemoprevention: strategies to save our skin.Einspahr JG, Bowden GT, Alberts DS.

Arizona Cancer Center, University of Arizona, P.O. Box 245024, Tucson, AZ 85724, USA.

There are over 1 million cases of skin cancer diagnosed yearly in the United States. The majority of these are nonmelanoma (NMSCs) and are associated with chronic exposure to ultraviolet light (UV). Actinic keratosis (AK) has been identified as a precursor for SCC, but not for BCC. AKs are far more common than SCC, making them excellent targets for chemoprevention. Cancer chemoprevention can prevent or delay the occurrence of cancer in high-risk populations using dietary or chemical interventions. We have developed strategies that have rational mechanisms of action and demonstrate activity in preclinical models of skin cancer. Promising agents proceed to phase I-III trials in subjects at high risk of skin cancer. UV light induces molecular signaling pathways and results in specific genetic alterations (i.e., mutation of p53) that are likely critical to skin cancer development. UVB-induced changes serve as a basis for the development of novel agents. Targets include inhibition of polyamine or prostaglandin synthesis, specific retinoid receptors, and components of the Ras and MAP kinase signaling pathways. Agents under study include: epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a green tea catechin with antioxidant and sunscreen activity, as well as UVB signal transduction blocking activity; perillyl alcohol, a monoterpene derived from citrus peel that inhibits Ras farnesylation; difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), an inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase and polyamines; retinoids that target retinoid X receptors and AP-1 activity; and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents that inhibit cylooxygenase and prostaglandin synthesis. We performed a series of Phase I-II trials in subjects with multiple AK. For example, a phase II randomized trial of topical DFMO reduced AK number, suppressed polyamines, and reduced p53 protein. Our goal is to develop agents for use in combination and/or incorporation into sunscreens to improve chemoprevention efficacy and reduce skin cancer incidence.

Reply:No, it doesn't always turn into cancer:

"It is estimated that 10 to 15 percent of active lesions, which are redder and more tender than the rest will take the next step and progress to squamous cell carcinomas."

Of course, you may be one of those that it does become cancerous---since you refuse to stay away from the UV rays that are the EXACT cause of your skin problems. I would find another dermatologist immediately. Don't wait a month.

Reply:I have acnitic keratosis. I just went to the dermatologist. I am VERY pale skinned. I burn walking from work to the car. I have some on my hands, chest and nose. She said 96% or so will not turn into cancer. You should start wearing sunblock and stop being a sun lover. Get a fake tan. That's what I've always had to do. It's not so bad. Who cares if you look like an albino. It's your life and skin. Protect it or die of cancer. With all that history of cancer in your family it looks like you would think twice before lying there and baking in the sun. You are at a very high risk.
Reply:Do you mean "Actinic keratosis"?

Actinic keratosis (also called solar keratosis, senile keratosis, or AK) is a premalignant condition of thick, scaly, or crusty patches of skin. It is most common in fair-skinned people who are frequently exposed to the sun, because their pigment isn't very protective. It usually is accompanied by solar damage. Since some of these pre-cancers progress to squamous cell carcinoma, they should be treated.

Please see the web pages for more details on Actinic keratosis.

Reply:I have this same problem (it's very common) and I went to the dermatologist about it. Have you gone to the dermatologist? He gave me a prescription lotion, it doesn't really have a name. If you haven't gone to the dermatologist, you probably should if you want to get rid of it (well, there really isn't a cure) If the lotion doesn't work for you, you would have to go back in about three months and they'll do another thing. I just started the lotion treatment about two weeks ago, and it hasn't really worked.

Question about Keratosis Pilaris?

I've always wondered if guys consider Keratosis Pilaris (KP) to be a turn off. I have it %26amp; it doesn't bother me so much, what do guys think?

Question about Keratosis Pilaris?
i am 23 and have had it since i was little. So far, only one guy has actually noticed, or commented on it anyways, and that is actually my fiance. He asked what it was and asked if it bothered me, I said not anymore but i still wish there was a way to lessen the appearance or cure, and he dropped it. As long as it wasn't bothering me, he had no problem with it. But every once in a while he will come home with some new soap or lotion or something to see if that will work better than my current regimin...but he does it because he just wants to take care of me, not because he wants me to be perfect.

But over the years, most people actually thought i had just a lot of freckles on my arms. they didn't realize it wasn't unless i pointed it out. I wouldn't worry about everyone else and if it is a turn off. If it is a turn off to a guy, then he is too shallow and not worthy of your love.
Reply:I have had it since I was born and it is really itchy!!!!!!!!! I usually wear long sleeves so it doesn't bother me.
Reply:this was interesting to me for I asked a question earlier about small hard white bumps and 2 answered saying I may have this. I read up on some sites but it seemed that is red and not white but maybe they can be both. But whatever mine are no one has ever mentioned it but mine are on my ankles and only on a beach I guess would ones really notice them so much....if other places if its a turn off..he is the loser not you.

Rough skin/ keratosis pilaris?

I don't want to buy anything expensive or offline but i have keratosis piaris on the skin of my triceps and a few circular scars from popping the bumps. Anyone know of a way to get rid of the bumps and even out my skintone?

Thanks!

Rough skin/ keratosis pilaris?
I also have this and I'm only 15. My doctor gave me some urea cream and it helped for a bit, but then it stopped working. So I tried using extra strength moisturizing lotion and so far it's working, but it might stop again like the urea cream did. The best thing to do is consult your doctor and ask him what would work for you. Good luck!

Can Pearson's Promise cure Keratosis Pilaris???

I just saw that product in the internet.. And as of now, that is the only product that focuses on curing Keratosis Pilaris. It has some nice testimonials from many people... But can it really cure Keratosis Pilaris??

Can Pearson's Promise cure Keratosis Pilaris???
I got a good laugh when I looked up "Pearson's Promise". Because, without having to spend an arm and a leg, I have been using products that exactly mimic that brand. I have had a decent amount of sucess using the following steps: 1. In the shower, BEFORE getting my arms wet, I use St. Ives medicated apricot scrub. (The tube now says for blackheads/blemishes but it's the same stuff.) I also use the store brand version, with the same result. Scrub it in gently for a few minutes, then rinse off. Note: hot water makes the redness worse, warm is better. 2. Follow up immediately with Lac-Hydrin (the most expensive part at still only around seven bucks.) Coat it on pretty well, and leave off putting on your shirt until it's totally dry. I put it on, then do my hair/makeup. By then it's soaked in. The trick is to do both EVERY day. You can actually use the lotion 2x per day, but I always forget. Regardless, the whole 'system' costs me about $12 a month. I also started adding some glycolic acid to the routine, in the form of a product called "Pimple Eraser". (I know that's a bad name, and the bottle was kind of cheap-looking, but it's what inside that counts!) I put it on after the shower, let it sit for a few minutes, then do the lotion. That has boosted my results enough that I'm looking at other glycolic acid products online at higher percents. Good luck! Take these ideas to a derm. doc and try maybe Retin-a, I hear that works really well too. "Never give up, never surrender!"
Reply:Keratosis Pilaris is a genetically inherited skin condition, since your skin is continually renewing itself, there is no permanent "cure" for it. You can only treat it to lessen its appearance. Whatever you do to treat keratosis pilaris, you will need to continue to do for however long you wish to reap the benefits of the treatment. I have yet to learn of a treatment that makes the small red bumps completely vanish. There are several that will help reduce their appearance though. I personally use DermaDoctor KP Duty cream (www.dermadoctor.com), it seems to help the most, though the red bumps are still visible, just less so. It's quite expensive though. I haven't tried the Pearson's Promise. If you think it looks promising, try it out. But be aware that any claims of completely curing the skin condition are false.

To help the appearance of your skin you can do the following:

-drink lots of water

-don't pick at the red bumps

-don't try to scrub the bumps off using a loofah or exfoliating pad- this will only irritate your skin and make it redder

-you can gently loosen the top layer of dead skin cells by using a washcloth or textured soap. Just don't be rough.

I have Keratosis Pilaris, (chicken skin), which is dry bumpy skin on the upper arms, can anyone help?

For as long as i can remember, I have had dry, bumpy skin on my upper arms and thighs, I have found out this is called Keratosis Pilaris. Its ment to be really common, with around 50% of people effected by this 'chicken skin' as it is commonly known as. Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with it, or at least make it a lot less noticeable. I would love to be able to wear a tank top!

I have Keratosis Pilaris, (chicken skin), which is dry bumpy skin on the upper arms, can anyone help?
You also will need to gently exfoliate those areas regularly (daily?) with this condition. A strong wash cloth and some elbow grease will do it. Make sure you don't use something too rough or harsh as that will tear the top "tissue paper" layer of skin you have and will cause irritation, which will just make your problem worse. Go easy, and do it regularly.

Then use something to soften the skin and seal in its natural moisture. I see a post suggesting flax seed oil, which is a nice, natural product that surely would do the trick. An oil really cannot "moisturize," but it can lock in any moisture in your skin, so it doesn't dry out so quickly. Dryness could be part of your problem. Flax seed oil may also provide some oil-soluable vitamins that will help.

I also have a shower filter for chlorine, which I think is an big irritant to many people. I pretty much eliminated my dry and irritated skin problems with the chlorine filter. If you can't install one, try getting one of those counter-top pitchers that filter the water, and use it as a final rise after your bath or show, to see if that also helps. If it's too cold to pour that pitcher on you, use a fresh wash cloth and pour the filtered water on that, then run it over your upper arms. Then pat dry, and seal in the chlorine free moisture on your skin's surface with the flax seed oil. I bet following this regiman will clear you up completely. If you still have some lingering issues with the KP, then after the rinse, add a toner with AlphaHydroxy Acids in it. Let it soak in/dry, and then put on the flax seed oil. You will have the most gorgeous upper arms ever. Girl, get your summer clothes READY!!

PS I also noticed my complexion was less irritated and dry and felt less "tight" on my cheeks in winter when I managed my skin's exposure to chlorine.
Reply:My daughter was diagnosed with the same thing when she was about 4 years old. The doctors told us she needs to take the supplement "Flax Seed Oil". It comes in liquid or softgels. You have to literally take a ton of it to see any improvement. Doctors also said to keep her out of the sun. Use LOTS of sunscreen. She is now 30 yr. old and wore a strapless wedding gown.

I have Keratosis Pilaris, what kind of foundation do you recommend to cover redness?

I have keratosis pilaris and I was wondering if anyone knows of a foundation that'll cover redness and will last throughout the day. Some brands work but after about an hour or so or when I get really hot the redness on my face shows through...I've tried max factor it works best so far. I've also tried mineral makeups they dont work at all for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have Keratosis Pilaris, what kind of foundation do you recommend to cover redness?
Do u get maybelline brands where u live??? Cos maybelline liquid to powder finish is xellent. It blends really well. Leaves skin flawless. Or else u buy a foundation which nearly matches ur skin tone or one which is a shade darker. This one is also gr8 for people with an oily complexion or a normal one.
Reply:You should try a liquid definitely to combat your dryness. Try to find Jane Iredale, they're pressed minerals gives amazing coverage and shouldn't further irritate your skin. Report It

Reply:Are you moisurizing really well first? That will help it last longer. Plus it will also help with the keratosis pilaris.

Also I think you can try spot applying a pale green coverup makeup. This will counteract redness.

You might try wearing a lighter makeup. Something that's a combo powder and foundation.

Definitely go for hypoallergenic and non poreclogging.
Reply:Try Joe Blasco, or any really professional make up for tv and movies, it is thicker and covers way more and lasts longer than anything in the department stores.

Treatment for keratosis pilaris??

Does anyone know any good lotions, scrubs, treatments for keratosis pilaris? I've got lots of it on my arms and it's really embarrassing!!

Treatment for keratosis pilaris??
o yes, finnally someone going through what i go through it sucks dont it cause peole always either think im cold or i have acne on my arm.lol. well there are creams but they are expensive and not worth it. there is no found cure for this but creams treat it. but....so does this tanning cream ittried this summer. it was meant for me to tan but afetr using it for the first time i noticed my kp went away and my skin was really nice smooth and healthy looking so thats wut i use its called....Jergens Natrural Glow Daily Mosisturizer...its lk 5 dollars and it works just as well as all the creams madde for kp.
Reply:Retin-A, but it's expensive and can hurt. Insurance gives you a hard time about covering it.

Tanning, which of course exposes you to UV rays, and the benefit stops once you stop tanning.

I don't know how old you are...age is a huge factor in it, as many sufferers do eventually grow out of it.

Seborrheic Keratosis?

Possibly Keratosis Pilaris?

Okay, for as long as I can remember, I've had really big red bumps on my upper arms, thighs, shins, and lower back. I think they're red, at least; they might be red because my skin color is red, or maybe they'd be red anyway.

Right. Anyway, I went to some doctors and they gave me cortizone shots with absolutely no effect, so they said there was nothing they could do. Now, I find out that I might have Keratosis Pilaris. Only one problem- KP is pretty common, but I have never seen anyone with what I have.

It's like I have little shells where my hair follicles should be. Seriously, you can't cut me where the bumps are- it just glances off and scratches me (unless I get stabbed or something, I'm sure). It doesn't break skin.

It's pretty ugly. I can pick them and release the hair inside, but it just grows back. This seems like KP on steiroids, because KP is, according to my research, mostly UNDER the skin, not on top of it.

Could it be something else?

Possibly Keratosis Pilaris?
Yep, that sounds like KP. I have it also with eczema. I've learned to get used to it. Before I would pick at it to see if it would go away, but it won't. Just don't worry about it and accept it as part of who you are. To lessen the appearance of redness, moisterize the areas.
Reply:probable KP. Not harmful. Leave it alone.

Will keratosis pilaris affect a tattoo?

I have keratosis pilaris (these red bumps usually on the back of your arms), but i want to get a tattoo there. Has anyone had any success or problems with getting a tattoo on these areas? I assume the bumps will affect healing and color. Thanks!

Will keratosis pilaris affect a tattoo?
According to the Keratosis Pilaris site, it will take longer for the tattoo to heal and may look a little off. The best thing to do is talk to your doctor and a tattoo artist.

Keratosis Pilaris?!?!?

Okay, so I was recently diagnosed with the skin condition Keratosis Pilaris.

(sucks)

I was just wondering, people out there with it too, what worked best for you at relieving it?

i was prescribed Differin, a Retin-A type ointment.

Keratosis Pilaris?!?!?
Keratosis pilaris is an extremely common and benign disorder of keratinized hair follicles. Etiology is unknown, although it may be due to a disorder of corneocyte adhesion that prevents normal desquamation in the area around the follicle.

Medical Care

Education and reassurance are the cornerstones of therapy for keratosis pilaris.

The noninflamed horny papules usually remit with age and increasing time, but they are resistant to most forms of short-term therapy.

Encourage tepid showers instead of hot baths, along with the use of mild soaps and a home humidifier.

An emollient cream may help alleviate rough surfaces in mild cases. A topical keratolytic agent such as lactic acid, salicylic acid, or urea preparations may be beneficial in more extensive cases. Several recent reports claim good results with 2-3% salicylic acid in 20% urea cream. Topical tretinoin therapy has also been used with varying degrees of success.

Lesions with significant inflammation may improve with the use of medium-potency emollient-based topical steroid preparations. Inflammation is usually reduced markedly by 7 days, at which point the steroid should be discontinued.

Keratosis Pilaris..Help Please..?

Hey..Im 16 and i have keratosis pilaris. Its just on my upper arm and Ive tried to use one or two creams but they dont work soi stick to coco butter. However there was some signs of improvement but then it stopped working. I need something to cover it for some parties when i wear short tops. Would fake tan work.. and if yes which one would you recommend. Also What other treatments can i try to either rid it or hide it?

Thank You

x

Keratosis Pilaris..Help Please..?
Try an exfoliant...something with pumice in it. Did the doctor tell you what it actually is? There's a waxy substance that builds up in the pores and that cream is supposed to break it up so that it doesn't block them.

No, the cream doesn't really work...and it's expensive.

I don't think the fake tan would work...real sunlight (or tanning with UV) might work.
Reply:i have the same condition- except just a little on my face. i've tried almost everything, and no, fake tan doesn't work. so i've made an appointment with a dermatologist. you should too. but anyway, who cares what your arms look like?
Reply:i have same problem, i have not been able to find anything to cover it. i just use a Brillo pad to scrub as much dead skin off as i can, because that is one of the main reasons the bumps form. i can never where short sleeve shirts because of this reason. I'm not sue if a fake tan will work it may hide some of the redness. i have thought of this too. i havent tried it though

Keratosis pilaris, what can i use to reduce it?
Gentle exfoliants can help, as can keeping your skin well moisturized. Try to never scrub your skin (this can aggravate the condition) and talk to your pharmacist to see if they can recommend a lotion with lactic acid.
Reply:The only old-fashioned treatment I know is to rub in a mixture of salicylic acid and soft paraffin, plus scrubbing with a loofah.

Have you asked the pharmacist at your local chemist because there may well be something produced by one of the large pharmaceutical firms these days.

Keratosis and Pilaris and UREA?

Urine has urea so if I "pee" on my arms with bumps (eeeew, but if it is effctive, why not) will it improve my skin?

keratosis pilaris is like permanent goosebumps usually on ur forearms. UREA is said to make the appearance better

Keratosis and Pilaris and UREA?
No, it will not improve your skin ! Urea is found in urine, but in very very very small amounts, and not enough to improve the skin on your arms.

Keratosis Pilaris is a genetic disorder, so there is not a true true. You can manage it better by washing with a "buff puff" pad or one of those soft nylon bath sponges. Use a good quality moisterizer (Purpose, Amlactin, Neutrogena, or DML if you can find DML) daily. This will help lessen the keratotic plugs.

Urea creams are great too !!

Hope this helps

Keratosis pilaris question.?

I went to a dermatologist and I was told I had keratosis pilaris, and that it was not curable. I've come to understand this condition has a lot to do with the hairs in your skin, almost like ingrown hairs but a bit different. If that's the case, do you believe laser hair removal may help this problem because lotions haven't done a thing for me.

Keratosis pilaris question.?
Keratosis Pilaris is an extremely common condition affecting nearly 50% (or more) of the adult population. As your physician mentioned, it is not curable and therefore, laser hair removal probably won't help or he/she would have recommended it.

I've attached several links about KP. Your best treatment is to educate yourself about your condition and follow your physician's recommendations, including the use of any topical creams he/she may have prescribed.

Keratosis Pilaris is ruining my life?

I'm a cheerleader and a basketball player. My keratosis pilaris shows because its all over my legs. It feels like everyone is looking at your skin. I've tried putting lotions for months, but it isn't going away. =( What do i do?

Keratosis Pilaris is ruining my life?
this is one of those problems, where modern medicine has no interest in finding a cure for, because it's a harmless, genetic skin condition. However, I heard a long time ago that it becomes less evident as you grow older, and it's true. Over the years, it's faded almost away for me, I had it bad on my upper arms.

I know this is no help, but it's the best I can do.
Reply:I just got this lotion called KP duty from Dermadoctor. So far its been a week and the bumps have gone down, theres some reviews from the website and they mostly say about a month for great results so im working on it. so u can get it from sephora.com or dermadoctor.com. Report It

Reply:You got my interest....what is Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis PIlaris?

I guess I have self diagnosed what is on my arms. Through reading a variety of online articles, I think I have Keratosis Pilaris on my upper arms and even on my forearms. I have heard about it on the upper arms, but not on the forearms before. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of the redness or even reduce it?

Keratosis PIlaris?
Keratosis pilaris is a very common but not-so-easy to treat condition of the skin. Most dermatologists recommend moisturizers used on a frequent basis with the idea that the pores which are impacted will soften and eventually open up. Some common over-the-counter moisturizers you can try are cetaphil or eucerin. Try not to squeeze them - and if they get red and appear to be filled with pus you may have a case of folliculitis going on which would require antibiotics. Try using simple moisturizers several times a day, especially after showering and before bed - if this doesn't work you may want to see a dermatologist.
Reply:The forearms are not a common place for KP, the common sites are upper arms, thighs and cheeks. There is an over the counter cream called Amlactin XL that works great for this problem. KP is a form of eczema, you will most likely grow out of it but it can take time.

If you prefer to see a Dr. for this, there are many prescription creams that work good, Lachydrin 12% or Umecta 40% are 2 names of creams that work good.
Reply:The lady above me has some good advice - I was going to suggest the same thing ;)

In addition my boss swears by A and D ointment (the kind for babies)
Reply:My mom is a dermatologist, It is actually Polaris Kerotosis (you may want to check my spelling). It is a skin condition in which your skin does not slough fast enough. (kinda gross, especially when it's severe). To get rid of the redness, you can use Eucerin redness relief. It is actually for the face but it works great for your condition. (It also doubles as a sunscreen.) Scrubbing your arms with a salt scrub and/ or loofah will make them smoother. There are also medications such as Renova (spell check) and Retinae (spell check). There is a very good chance you will grow out of it.
Reply:I have Keratosis Pilaris too and i would reccomend using an exfoliating wash to get rid of the dry skin as well as something that builds up and causes it (i don't remember what its called, sorry.). If you can get rid of the bumps then you can probably reduce the redness that goes along with it.

Keratosis palaris?

i have red dots on the back of my legs, my thighs and my upper arms. i did some research and found out that it could be keratosis palaris. any creams or anything that can get rid of it?

Keratosis palaris?
Keratosis Pilaris is a skin disease that 50% of the world's population has. Moisturizer helps (I recommend cocoa butter), as does a small amount of sunlight. Thus, your skin will improve somewhat in the coming summer months. I think there is also a new treatment out that contains urea(not the pee sort) that helps exfoliate and smooth the skin. Ask your dermotologist about it.
Reply:i have it too! and i used eucerin intensive cream. it works so well. you an get it at a pharmacy anywher for only like 8bucks. and dont get the lotion. its different. the way to use it is to put alot of lotion on at night and carefully put long sleep pants on. thent then the next morning, rub it like you are exfoliating it and alot of dead skin cells and the stuff clogging your pores (the red dots) will go away! it totally works! do it a few times to get all of it off and continue doing it to get avoid keratosis pilaris! yeah!
Reply:I have the same thing. There is no "cure"... keeping moisturized with anything helps. There are a few resource groups if you search that term online.

Keratosis pilaris on upper arms and possibly cheeks?

Im 25 years old, I have what I believe to Keratosis Pilaris on my upper arms. I also think I might have it on my cheeks as well. For a while I have been thinking it is rosacea, but Im not sure. If it is KP, is there a cream or something out there that can be used on BOTH arms and face?

Keratosis pilaris on upper arms and possibly cheeks?
I suggest consulting a dermatologist to avoid irritating your skin further. Facial skin is more sensitive.

Here's what I was able to find:

Reply:I have this on my upper arms as well. It is only noticable when i do physical activity. Not nice is it? I asked my doc about this and he saud if you go to a pharmacy, there is a cream that reduces the appearance of it. Not sure if it is suitable for the face, but see you pharmasist or doctor just to be sure, as it is a kind of acid

Keratosis pilaris?

I have keratosis pilaris, all dermatologists creams and other perscriptions I have used have not rid or created the illusion effect of them not there anymore, does anyone have this or had this and had success and getting rid of them? I know the sun and tanning helps but I want to rid them-I am so self concious of t-shirts and tanks but I have great arms!!

Keratosis pilaris?
go to dermadoctor.com and purchase a tube of KP Duty. IT WORKS!

Both me and my child have KP and this cream, when used DAILY really works. If you stop using it, in about a month you'll notice it starting to return.

It's not cheap, but it is worth the cost.
Reply:I have it too. I bought some skin bump minimizer lotion from Avon(don't waste your money on that). I have also heard that the Eucerin Plus intensive Repair Creme is supposed to work good for it.
Reply:I have learned to live with it. I was told that although there are some lotions (very high strenghth prescription stuff) that will alleviate it only temporarily and it would come back if I stopped using the lotion. There is no known cure. Sorry.

Keratosis Pilaris?

Is keratosis pilaris incurable?

Keratosis Pilaris?
Yes, there is no cure for it but there are certain things that help mask it for the time being. Concealer usually does the trick for me, but I've also heard certain diets do. (drink two or three glasses of carrot juice daily, and get Vitamin A in your diet) Another thing that works for people is tanning. However, I'm afraid melanoma may strike me so I prefer to stay away from tanning salons or being out in the sun for too long. And if you think about it - tans only last for so long until you're back to your natural colour. And when your natural colour comes back, it's usually winter. Keratosis pilaris is said to be worse in the winter time because of the dry air so it's harder to hide. But to get down to the point: I have heard that there are cases where keratosis pilaris goes away with age. If you have a relative that has or has had it perhaps ask them if it ever disappeared. I know keratosis pilaris is hereditary and as a result I got it from my relatives. Good luck!
Reply:Chicken skin is a genetic follicular disease....no cure. Try Salex to help.

****The guy below who listed the 3 links has good info. Salex is best - and the guy who said it is curable is wrong. It will fade, but it is not curable. Geesh. You will need a script for Salex - see your doc.
Reply:definitely curable. it's just clogged hair follicles. sort of like freckles or birthmarks. not an infection or anything to wrry about. just sort of looks and feels gross. There's this lotion called KP by dermadoctor that works great. but you have to use it at least every other day.
Reply:Keratosis pilaris is benign, self-limiting, and often disappears with age. It is more common in patients with atopic dermatitis (eczema) and seems to run in families.

Please see the webpages for more details and images on Keratosis pilaris.
Reply:I have this. I have always been overly aware of it, too.

The only way it went away, although temporarily, was when I was at the tanning salon. I did that this year and I did that back about 8 years ago, each for two months at a time, and it worked. I don't recommend it because tanning is bad for you, but it's a quick fix if you are going to be in a wedding and have to wear sleeveless dresses~

Keratosis Pilaris...?

I've got Keratosis Pilaris...if you don't know what that it, it's like allergy bumps (red %26amp; hideous) all over your arms %26amp; legs...does anyone else have it? And do you have any tips on minimizing it or getting rid of it all together?!

Keratosis Pilaris...?
try the body scrub from dermadoctor.com

Keratosis Pilaris?

I'm 14 and I was wondering about something on my skin.

I have these brown spots on my face and arm, I went to a lot of dermatologists but most of them didn't know. However they said it might have to do something about sunburning to much. That is probably the cause because I play tennis a lot

everyday.

Another thing I have is on my arms and thais. My arm is all rough and stuff. Lots of bumps, large ones too. However when it gets to my upper arms, its smaller. One of my dermatologists said it's a thing called keratosis pilaris, but I don't remember anything much about it.

Anyone know anything about this?

Keratosis Pilaris?
Yes,

I suffered on my legs - and it really bothered me. After many doctors said it was nothing I took matters in to my own hands.

Get a lufa - and use a pure and hydrating soap/oil %26lt;not baby oil or mineral oil based things%26gt; and scrub every day in the shower. I also found a sea salt scrub that has helped a lot.

I read about a medicine for it but ask your MD - the things on your face sounds like sun spots - use a good SPF - and wear a hat if you can!
